PCYC Gymnastics State Championships

28 April 2025

The last weekend in October marked the xxth PCYC Gymnastics State Championship held at Fremantle PCYC.

The event, executed like a well-oiled machine by PCYC judges and coaches, showcased the talents of over 200 gymnasts. Among them, 18 boy and 188 girls, spanning skill levels from PCYC Level 3 to Level 7, gave their all. These remarkable gymnasts qualified for the State Championships by placing in the top 8 in their age group at the Regionals Championship earlier in the year.

Reaching the State Championship motivated gymnasts to elevate their performances and achieve personal bests.

Wesley, 11, who journeyed from Kalgoorlie, was thrilled with his ‘First Overall’ result in his category, marking a significant improvement from his previous competition.

High stakes also meant high nerves for many competitors. For Sienna, 12, the long trip from Albany to Perth meant even stronger feelings of anticipation, even her Mum felt nervous, “I felt like I was competing too!”.

Coach Michelle from Albany explained that a key part of the event is helping the gymnasts build their resilience. The prevailing sentiment of doing your best and being proud no matter your achievement echoed throughout the weekend and provided reassurance for many gymnasts.

Gymnasts from Albany PCYC strived to move up the ranks to qualify for Gym WA Levels. This achievement would give gymnasts exciting opportunities to develop their skills at more regional competitions.

Coach Topaz from Subiaco PCYC acknowledged the immense pressure from the watching crowd, noting that it pushed many gymnasts to land skills that hadn’t previously mastered at training. The support and guidance from coaches like Topaz instilled confidence in the gymnasts, urging them to channel any setbacks into improving at the next competition.

Gymnast Bridget, 13, from Subiaco PCYC, felt the pressure beforehand. However, once she stepped into the competition environment and felt the encouraging atmosphere, her nerves completely relaxed.

Jasmine, 11, from Fremantle PCYC, shared a different perspective. Despite not competing, she spent the entire weekend volunteering at the event. Her dedication was driven by her love for gymnastics, as she put it, “I love it here!”

A heartfelt thank you extends to our dedicated coaches and event staff for orchestrating an incredible event.

Congratulations to all our talented Gymnasts, we can’t wait to see where your skills take you next!
