Adventure unleashed in Carnarvon
Thanks to Targeted Participation Funding from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, Carnarvon PCYC have been able to provide young people in their community the opportunity to participate in a 6-week Paddle Program. The program focuses on encouraging young people to participate in kayaking, learn new skills and work together as a team.
With assistance from PCYC and the Carnarvon Flexible Learning Centre, participants have learnt how to safely control vessels, rescue a fallen friend and help them back into their kayak, read the weather and understand safe waterways.
Carnarvon PCYC Centre Manager, Bree Maher said, “Programs such as this are a great way for young people to not only try something new, but to develop important life skills such as teamwork and understanding the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.”
“It has been rewarding hearing feedback from participants – they have loved exploring the river and spending time in nature, saying that they feel more confident in the water and now understand how to safely navigate their waterways.”
