Collie PCYC Dunny Derby Champions!
Police Minister Paul Papalia CSC MLA and Member for Collie-Preston Jodie Hanns MLA saw it all when they visited Collie PCYC!
The two special guests dropped in during a safeSPACETM session to chat to the young people and challenge them to some basketball. Little did they know they were also going to get a sneak peek of the winning go-karts under construction, due to enter into the Donnybrook Dunny Do Over (DDDO) Derby at the weekend!
For those that don’t know – the DDDO is an old Donnybrook Apple Festival tradition which involves teams racing toilets on wheels over a predetermined track — it made a comeback as part of the community’s Donnybrook Dunny Do Over this year.
Collie PCYC entered three teams into the derby and took out the top three places!
The adult team, driven by Collie PCYC’s own Kristy Milne, won first place, and the two junior teams won first and second place in their division. In addition, one of the junior teams named ‘Mad Cowz’ was awarded ‘Best Dressed Derby Crew’ for their awesome cow onesies in addition to being crowned ‘Golden Dunny Champions’ with the fastest time in the competition.
Jodie Hanns MLA commented, “It was a pleasure to visit the Collie PCYC team with Hon. Paul Papalia CSC MLA recently, to check out the progress of the Dunny Derby billie carts and proudly introduce him to the great team of dedicated staff and the energetic kids making use of this vital space.”
Linda Gallagher, Collie Centre Manager, said, “We had a lot of fun, overcame a lot of nerves and butterflies and represented Collie with pride.”
And the fun didn’t end there – the Collie kids also treated the VIPs to some tricks on the trampoline – what an awesome week!
