Police and High School Teams Bring the Heat in Narrogin Blue Light WA™ Hockey Showdown

Published: August 27, 2024 3:49pm

For the second consecutive year, students from Narrogin Senior High School (NSHS) and members of the Police and Emergency Services faced off in the annual Narrogin Blue Light WA™ hockey match, vying for ultimate victory on the field.

After some light-hearted pre-game taunting, the much-anticipated match kicked off. Reigning champions, Team Police came out with as much energy as they could muster and the opening term was very much an arm wrestle, with a bit of luck Constable Langridge managed to sneak away a quick early goal against Team High School.

The first goal ignited the competition, spurring Team High School to step up their game. During the second quarter, the ball lived in their forward arc, putting Senior Constable Spencer under immense pressure in goals. The perseverant goalie put on a stellar performance, managing to block every shot that came his way.

The pace remained relentless through the third term, with both teams exchanging fierce plays. Still, Team Police managed to hold their ground and push forward against the ruthless high school students.

In a thrilling final quarter, a series of key plays led to the final winning goal being secured by Teacher and ring-in for Team Police, Steven Durell.

Despite the defeat, Team High School remained in high spirits, enjoying every second of taking on their rivals. Some unforgettable moments during the day included Senior Constable Johnson taking the field against his two children which brought a few jibes to the match, in addition to what appeared to be an accidental trip of a student in the first quarter by none other than the OIC himself, Senior Sergeant Devine.

After the game, players and supporters gathered at the Hockey Club for a well-deserved celebration, complete with a sausage sizzle and refreshments. Awards were presented to the best sportsmen from both teams, with the coveted best-on-ground award going to Steven Durell for his match-winning performance. The award was presented by Narrogin’s own Bevan George, an Olympian and highly regarded hockey star.

We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Coles Narrogin for supplying food and refreshments for the post-match celebrations, as well as the Holyoak Wheatbelt Community Alcohol & Drug Service for supplying the all-important awards. Finally thank you to all who partook in the match and made the second annual event a resounding success. The spirit and enthusiasm from both players and spectators alike were palpable and made for an enjoyable day for all.

For now, the prized Shield remains with Narrogin Police, proudly displayed at NSHS to fuel the anticipation for next year’s rematch. With many predicting that Team Police won’t be able to maintain their winning streak, 2025 promises to be another exciting showdown.
