Rapping to a new beat
Last month, young people in Geraldton had the opportunity to write, rap and record their own songs in a professional music studio with Lawrence Edwards from Strika1 Music.
This is part of the new RAP Music program supported by Geraldton PCYC, the Northern Agricultural Catchments Council WA, WA Police and Bundiyarra.
The aim for the teens is to create a series of RAP songs about important topics that affect the community. The first topic focused on spreading awareness around rock throwing and the damage it causes.
The young rappers were educated on the topic so that they can then create their own lyrics and feature in the songs. The songs’ lyrics included a mix of English and local Aboriginal languages. The participants enjoyed getting to be a part of the song writing process and get a taste of what professional music recording and production is like.
