Rio Tinto Increases Funding for At-Risk Youth in Roebourne
PCYC is delighted to announce that Rio Tinto has generously agreed to increase its funding for vulnerable children and young people in Roebourne.
Rio Tinto already provides funding for PCYC to operate its safeSPACE™ program in Roebourne each weekend, proudly partnering with PCYC since 2021.
PCYC’s safeSPACE™ program is co-designed with local community and provides recreational, cultural and personal development activities, including snacks, dinner and transport home.
PCYC CEO Peter Tranter, said “I would like to thank Rio Tinto sincerely for their generosity. They have a deep knowledge and care for the Roebourne Community, and did not hesitate to step in with this funding at short notice. This will now allow PCYC to open its doors for five days a week until the end of 2024, ensuring that vulnerable young people in Roebourne have a safe and welcoming place to go after school and on weekends.”
Laura Dunlop, PCYC’s Head of Youth Services said “safeSPACE™ currently supports more than 100 individual young people in Roebourne. Programs like safeSPACE™ are critical in providing diversionary, recreational and educational opportunities for children and young people in a safe environment where they can access positive role models, develop life skills, build a sense of belonging and be empowered to reach their potential."
Rio Tinto Vice President of Health, Safety, Environment and Communities, Caitlin Westgarth, said “It is wonderful to be able to support PCYC to ensure its programs can continue to run five nights a week for the rest of this year. Supporting the communities where we operate is an important priority for Rio Tinto. The work of the Roebourne PCYC is vital to the development and support of vulnerable children and young people and it’s a great privilege to ensure it continues for the remainder of 2024.”
