Overview
PCYC is Western Australia’s leading youth organisation, working in partnership with the WA Police Force and local communities to empower children and young people to reach their full potential.
With 16 Centres across the state, PCYC collaborates with Police to deliver meaningful programs and create opportunities for young people. In addition, we support 67 Blue Light WA™ Units, providing safe and engaging activities for children in remote and regional areas where a PCYC Centre may not be available.
Since 1941, our Bunbury Centre has been a cherished community hub, providing a safe and supportive environment where young people are guided and empowered by dedicated staff. From our renowned gymnastics program to the much-loved safeSPACE™ program, the Centre has delivered countless opportunities for growth, connection, and fun. Many local residents will have fond memories of engaging in Blue Light Discos, Boxing, Basketball, Gymnastics, Police Rangers, Alternative Education programs and countless other activities delivered over several decades at Bunbury PCYC.
As part of our ongoing commitment to working alongside Australia’s First Nations community, PCYC proudly celebrates and supports our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, who make up 13% of our workforce, form a significant portion of the young people who attend our programs, and are key partners in our community work.
PCYC is proud to have recently received funding through the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Programme. This support enables us to launch an exciting project that celebrates local First Nations artists by commissioning bespoke artworks. These pieces will be proudly displayed at our Centre and featured on staff uniforms and other branded materials, honouring culture and creativity in a lasting and visible way.
The Opportunity
PCYC is seeking an artist to create an original artwork that captures the spirit of the Bunbury community, both its landscape and the vibrant energy of the young people who engage with our Centre.
The selected artist will have creative freedom to interpret this theme in a way that is both meaningful and culturally significant.
Artists are invited to nominate a fee of up to $5000 (excl. GST) based on the following considerations:
- Connection to PCYC: If there is no prior connection to PCYC, the artist would be invited to attend a session with Bunbury PCYC young people to inspire the artwork.
- Experience and recognition in the arts community.
- Size and complexity of the proposed work.
- Materials and production costs, which should be included in the proposed fee.
PCYC plays a vital role in supporting young people across the Southwest community, working closely with a wide range of partners, including local and state government. This initiative offers a rare opportunity to create a lasting and visible contribution that celebrates the region’s unique identity and vibrant youth culture.
Commission
The Commission includes:
- Payment: A one-time fee of up to $5000 (excl. GST)
- Recognition: The artist will be provided appropriate credit when the artwork is used by PCYC.
- Use: The artwork will be proudly displayed at our Centre and will be reproduced on staff uniforms and vehicles. It may also be used on corporate merchandise, such as lanyards, business cards, publications or printed materials, our website, and featured on digital channels and social media.
Artwork Themes and Specifications
The artwork should reflect one or more of the following themes:
- Young people’s connection to Bunbury PCYC.
- Aboriginal cultural stories of significance to the Wardandi people.
- Bunbury PCYC’s Centre colours (Pantone colours 2388C and 4154C).
Specifications
- Size: The artwork must be at least 1000mm x 1200mm.
- Medium: The artwork must be created on, or be suitable for reproduction onto, canvas. Artists are encouraged to choose a style and technique that best reflects their creative vision and interpretation of the theme.
Artist Profile
To celebrate and promote both the artist and the project, PCYC will feature an artist profile on our website and social media platforms. This will showcase the creative journey, highlight the final artwork displayed at the Centre, and include its reproduction on branded materials.
To support the development of this content, the artist will be invited to collaborate with PCYC staff at an appropriate stage during the creative process. This engagement may take place at the artist’s studio, at PCYC, or another mutually agreed location, and will involve documenting aspects of the artwork production.
Agreement
If successful, the artist will enter into an agreement including the following:
- Fee: the artist will receive a one-time payment of up to $5000 (excl. GST)
- Rights: PCYC to acquire the right to reproduce the artwork for corporate merchandise and uniforms.
- Ownership: The original artwork will remain with PCYC for permanent display at their Bunbury Centre.
- Payment Method: A 50% deposit will be paid upon signing the agreement, with the remaining 50% paid upon completion and delivery of the artwork.
Selection Process
Artist selection will be made via a panel of PCYC staff.
Submissions will be assessed based on the following criteria:
- Creative Impact: Originality, creativity, and alignment with the specified themes.
- Cultural Relevance: Representation of Wardandi culture and connection to PCYC.
- Practicality: Suitability for reproduction on corporate merchandise and uniforms.
Capability: Demonstrated ability to deliver quality work on time and at scale.
Submission Requirements
- A short biography or CV, highlighting their experience and connection to Aboriginal art.
- A concept statement explaining their inspiration and approach to the artwork.
- Up to three examples of previous work (images or portfolio).
Confirmation of their availability to complete the artwork by Friday, 12 December 2025.
